What are corrosion coupons?

Corrosion coupons are typically small metal samples used to monitor corrosion inside of pipelines and process equipment. Though typically made from metal alloys coupons can be made from polymers for compatibility testing. Corrosion coupons are made in many different sizes depending on the application and are machined from the same metal alloys as the pipeline or system being monitored. For example 1018 carbon steel is often used to monitor the corrosion in a carbon steel pipeline. Corrosion coupons are weighed on an analytical balance to 4 decimal places, after exposure to the system the coupons are weighed again to determine the mass loss. Based on the mass loss of the corrosion coupon a corrosion rate can be calculated using a standard formula. For more information on corrosion coupons please visit our web page here and our blog here.
